PSEL 2 & 3
Ethics, Equity
&
Cultural Responsiveness

Ethics

As an administrator, I understand the importance of ethics or having a clear set of moral principles.
  • Students are at the center of education.
  • Student discipline is fair, unbiased, and positive.  We use PBIS and encourage the use of "First/Then" boards, reward systems, and point sheets.
  • Our students are given the opportunity to experience effective teachers.  I am highly involved in the programming of the off-sites.
  • Students' strengths are encouraged and given academic and vocational opportunities to flourish.
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality - as an administrator it is vital that I model my expectations for staff.
  • Honest - I pride myself on being transparent with staff, families, and students.
  • Fair - staff, families, and students pick up quickly when something or someone is unfair.  During the pandemic, I feel it is imperative that leaders be flexible and "fair" regarding what is happening in many homes.  Teachers are pulled in many directions and even when working remotely often have their own children to monitor.  Parents are often juggling two or three students learning at home and are exhausted.  Fairness takes many forms for many people.
  • Moral principles - I do not cheat on data or test scores.  I do not steal resources or time.  I value my job and enjoy working with staff, students, and families.

"Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do." ~ Potter Stewart

Equity

I pride myself on ensuring our students are given the same educational opportunities as their typical peers.  This may look different for our students, but is an important piece of the academic, social-emotional and vocational puzzle.
  • We strive to "Know Our Students Well" through IEPs, Interest Inventories, Vocational One Assessments, Student Portfolios, and Profiles, etc.
  • Instructional Focus Calendar to ensure all students are learning the same content as their peers (is differentiated to their needs).
  • Vocational opportunities are given to our in-house students (due to the pandemic) through class specialties.  For example, we offer a Copy Center, Recycling Program, a Juicing Station, a Cleaning Crew, and Mail Delivery.
  • I created and implemented workstations for our students to give them real-world work simulations.
  • Our students take virtual field trips.
  • Professional Development for staff on best practices.
  • Students have access to appropriate curricula.
  • Our English Language Learners (ELL) receive exposure to the same curriculum/lessons as their peers (differentiated to meet their needs).
  • Our students participate in Activities of Daily Living to build their independence.

As Assistant Principal, one of my jobs is to empower students to learn from their family and other people of their own culture, as well as those from other cultures.  Cultural differences are assets and  I have facilitated many opportunities for our students, families and staff to experience various cultures.
  • District 75 Festival of The Arts
  • Haitian Flag Day (a collaboration between Aveyron Academy and Urban Action Academy)
  • African American Showcase
  • Hamilton on Broadway (I applied for the tickets and chaperoned the students)
  • Holidays Around the World
  • Yearly Talent Shows
  • Black History Month Celebration
  • Get Out the Vote
  • Hispanic History Month Celebration
  • Women's History Month Celebration
